I took one of my favorite vacations last week – a whole week at the beach. For me, there is no better place than by the water. Peace can be found where the ocean stretches as far as the eye can see, and the sun’s rays bounce off the tips of the gentle waves that break just before the shore.
The dry sand, roughed up and tousled, is a map of where people walk the dog and the baby, jog or play football. Tracks of the gulls who rush to the water’s edge to catch a snack and sand crabs that scuttle to the safety of their burrows leave their marks, too.
What I love most, though, is seeing the dolphins swim just off shore, gliding by in a slow, steady rhythm, an effortless movement of up and down, as their fins cut through the smooth surface of the water.
As I watch them, my breathing slows, and I match my inhale and exhale to their movements. They aren’t in any hurry, and finally, neither am I.
